Winesong is an annual celebration at The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens to benefit The Mendocino Coast District Hospital. This year crowds will converge in the gardens for the 32nd Annual Winesong event on September 10 and 11 to sample award-winning wines and edibles from more than 50 local and regional purveyors, with a pre-event, A Pinot Noir Celebration: Meet the Winemakers, slated for Friday, September 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Little River Inn. Excitement builds in the auction tents for live and silent auctions, with more than 150 lots ready for bidding, including international and domestic vacation packages, wine getaways, and original paintings and artwork.
Exciting Auction Highlights
Highlights of the auction this year include a 24 bottle vertical of Chateauneuf du Pape – Chateau de Beaucastel, a Tuscany Truffle Hunt at a private villa in Cortona, Italy, and Golf at Fairmont St. Andrews, Scotland for two, as well as a 3- night stay in Kentucky exploring the Bourbon Trail from Louisville to Lexington, and a 3-night stay at the Conrad Hotel, including tickets to the 101st Indy 500, which includes grandstand seats and the Snakepit Ball.
Winesong Celebrates Volunteers and Community
Winesong in Fort Bragg signals the end of summer, with a joyous bacchanal of celebration that brings the entire community together for an open-air party. People travel from near and far for the occasion, and many return to the area year after year, which gives a tremendous boost to the economy, and is the major fundraiser to keep the hospital here in Fort Bragg. Volunteers are the backbone of the event, and much like barn raising in days of old, our community spirit is alive and well here, right down to the Fund-A-Need Auction Lot which accepts donations to fund a specific and essential major need for the hospital.
Winesong takes place in one of the most beautiful spots on the planet, The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, with green lawns, abundant plant life, and flora of every description, as well as sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean as you wind your way along the paths and sample delicious creations of local and regional chefs, wineries, and breweries from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. It’s a multi-sensory delight, and lots of fun seeing what people are wearing from casual duds to elegant finery. Whether sunny or foggy, it’s a good idea to bring layers since the weather can change rather quickly at this time of year.
Two long-time supporters of the Winesong event will be honored this year, Grace Family Vineyards, and Artist of the Year, the late Lowell Herrero. Grace Family Vineyards has been a cornerstone of Winesong every year since 1992, and The Grace Family Foundation funds humanitarian efforts around the globe. Lowell Herrero’s work has been one (or more!) of the most popular auction items since 1997, and his classic image, Garvey Grape Harvest will be featured on the catalogue and posters for Winesong this year.
What’s a celebration without music? As you stroll along you’ll hear the strains of jazz, classical, blues, calypso, and folk from some amazing musicians dotting the landscape. Volunteers are still needed at the event, if you’d like to enjoy a few hours surrounded by happy revelers on a beautiful summer’s day. Sun hats and comfortable walking shoes are recommended, and don’t forget to bring your driver’s license to prove that you’re old enough to raise a glass and enjoy the celebration with fine wine and delightful company!
