As Fort Bragg continues to build a reputation as a popular tourist destination, local businesses are building and running green businesses. Not surprising. Living in a rural community, especially one surrounded forests and ocean, tends to heighten your awareness of the earth’s beauty and its limited resources.

Fort Bragg Vice Mayor Dave Turner, owner of FloBeds, is among the city’s green thinkers, recently introducing what is thought to be the world’s first completely green bed. “Every part of the Green Mattress™ bed — made of cotton, wool, latex and pine – is 100 per cent biodegradable and recyclable,” explained Turner. “Our factory-direct-to-you model further saves on fuel and distribution costs. The packing materials also are recyclable. If you buy wooden, instead of metal or plastic legs, the entire bed is made of natural compostable materials.” A town once living off lumber is now giving back.
