Print This Post Print This Post

Since it was revitalized a few years back, Fort Bragg’s Skunk Train is always on the move — literally and figuratively — with some new adventure or service added to one of the Mendocino Coast’s most popular attractions. The Skunk is living history. With your help, it will soon be a mobile art platform as well.

Muralists, painters, and visual artists are invited to submit design proposals for the embellishment of a special Skunk Train premium service rail car by the deadline of December 31, 2009. Application form, design submission requirements, evaluation criteria, and program timetable are available for download on the Arts Council of Mendocino County’s website at http://www.artsmendocino.org/ or by calling (707) 961-5449.

A total of $2,000 is available for stipends to artists. Up to five awards will be granted. The rail car work surface will be primed for painting and all materials will be provided to the artist through a generous donation from Kelly-Moore Paints. All selected artists will receive a one-year complimentary membership to the Arts Council of Mendocino County (a $25 dollar value) and 10 complimentary passes to ride the Skunk Train ($400 dollar value). With 55,000 Skunk Train riders annually, selected artists will benefit from significant exposure.

Proposals may be submitted for designs on the entire exterior and interior of the rail car, or for sections thereof. Available work surfaces include the exterior sides and ends of the car, and the interior end panels of the seats, window frames, ceiling and serving bar.

There will be two Rail Car Viewings for Prospective Artists at the Skunk Train Depot, North Main and Laurel Streets, in Fort Bragg:

Monday, November 16, 2009
4:00pm – 5:00pm

Thursday, December 3, 2009
10:00am – 11:00am

A review panel appointed by the Skunk Train and the Arts Council of Mendocino County will review and evaluate artists’ proposals. Artists will be notified of commission awards by January 15, 2010 with execution of the artwork occurring in February 2010. All work must be completed by February 28, 2010.
