Fort Bragg Whale Festival: March 20-21, 2010

Print This Post Print This Post

whale festival 2010Grey Whales are spouting along Fort Bragg’s coastline every day as they make their annual 5,000 mile northern migration from Baja to the Bering Sea. Each year we celebrate their passage with local festivities along the Mendocino Coast.

Fort Bragg’s 28th Annual Whale Festival will include many different whale watching opportunities, microbrew tasting and delicious local cuisine. Along with dozens of microbrews provided by the Fort Bragg Rotary Club, the area’s top chefs will produce their favorite chowders. A marine mammal art exhibit and crafts fair are also part of the two-day festival.

With some 20,000 gray whales migrating north from birthing grounds in Mexico to their winter home in Alaska, there will be plenty of whales to view from the Pomo Bluffs Park in Fort Bragg and miles of beaches in MacKerricher State Park just north of the city.

Runners will be treated to what makes the Haul Road the single most popular outing for Mendocino Coast locals. The course first cuts across coastal prairie studded with wildflowers; sandstone bluffs alternate with beaches and pooling stream-mouths, all flush with waterfowl. Spectacular sea and sky vistas, the freshest ocean breeze anywhere, and an occasional offshore spout make this year’s the classic Whale Run course. The course is mostly level on both paved and gravel roads. Early registration guarantees you a t-shirt. The race is sponsored by Soroptimist International of Fort Bragg. All proceeds benefit local worthy causes. Participants 16 yrs. and under charged $10. For additional information, contact: Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce: (800) 726-2780 or (707) 961-6300.

    Thank you so much!
