Beware of Winter Waves

Waves collide with Fort Bragg bluffs
This week’s anticipated tsunami didn’t bring much excitement, but do not underestimate the power of the Pacific. Especially during the winter it is important to exercise caution on the shores; sudden storm surges can bring in waves well over 20 ft endangering anyone in the water, on the bluffs or the beach.
Fort Bragg’s oceanfront location is the main draw for many visitors and the ocean is what keeps many locals here whether it be for the surfing, the beachwalks, or the beauty of being where the land meets the Pacific Ocean. As you enjoy the North Coast’s shoreline, please remember to be careful. A few years ago most people didn’t even know how to spell “tsunami,” but after South Asia’s tragic event, we were reminded of the oceans power. However, people don’t expect that big sudden waves could actually happen here.
Perhaps we won’t have an event of that scale, but it’s always a good practice to expect the unexpected and “Never turn your back on the ocean,” as prescribed by the ocean safety guidelines developed by the Caspar South Ocean Safety Committee. Read their guidelines for more tips: Be Swept Away By the Beauty, Not By The Sea.
