It’s a little early for Valentine’s Day, but what about the other love of your life? We know that most pet lovers don’t want to leave their precious pals at home, and luckily, Fort Bragg is the perfect place to bring your four-legged darling. Pet-friendly accommodations range from the basic, like Super 8 and Motel 6, to more deluxe accommodations like the North Cliff Hotel (3 pet-friendly rooms, including a double Queen and King Spa option), and Emerald Dolphin Inn, which has a large grassy field and access to paved walking trails with a gorgeous view of the Pacific and a secluded beach perfect for a pet on a leash. The Beachcomber Motel even has a dog park! It’s always a good idea to call ahead and determine if there are special restrictions and fees). A few other good stopping spots for people with pets are Surf and Sand, Surf Motel and Gardens, Beach House Inn, Coast Inn and Spa, Seabird Lodge, and Glass Beach Inn, too name just a few. Here in Fort Bragg, dogs can slurp free ice cream at Cowlick’s, and are welcomed with dog treats and fresh water in many downtown shops.
Vittles, Toys, and Treats for the King or Queen of Your Heart
You’ll find a giant ” healthy pet section” at Harvest Market, with high quality brands of pet food like Beaverdam Petfoods, Pet Burger from U.S. Wellness Meats, and Wysong dry dog and cat food, among other marvelous choices. If dogs and cats are indeed “the new kids” for many people these days, you’ll appreciate that Harvest also carries Bach’s Rescue Remedy for pets, herbal collars for dogs and cats, and Flora Pet Essentials multivitamins, and much more. What will they think of next? Both Harvest and Safeway carry a nice selection of pet toys and accessories, too! Fort Bragg Feed and Pet is the perfect place to get fresh chicken eggs, pet supplies and feed, or just stroll around and soak in the down-home rural atmosphere of a business that caters to all pets and farm animals.
Happy Trails for Pets
When it comes to man’s best friend, we can’t think of a single dog who doesn’t like running on trails and seeing the ocean or playing fetch. Fortunately there are many beaches where you can take your dog for a fun run, including the old Haul Road at MacKerricher Park. Some protected species like the Snowy Plover nest at certain beaches, and dogs are not allowed there even on leash, so pay attention to the signs, and ask the concierge at your hotel which places are best for your pooch. Pictured here is a funny pup who just loved the “sand” at Glass Beach.
Dog Park and Parks for Dogs
A wonderful family recreation center, CV Starr has a pool, waterslide, exercise classes and a great little off-leash dog park outside. The acres of trails at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens are perfect for strolling and frolicking with dogs on leash and their two-legged protectors. The gardens slogan is “where dogs rule” and you’ll find a china bowl full of dog treats just outside the gift shop for your canine friends.
Your Pet Welcome Here
When it comes to dining out, a few good choices that welcome your favorite four-legged companion include Silvers at the Wharf, Sea Pal Cove, and Piaci’s Pub. Silvers even sells meaty bones for your dog to enjoy for hours on end! Many of our parks have picnic tables, too, so you can enjoy the scenery and make sure that Fido or Fifi has the perfect snack before or after taking an invigorating hike along a coastal trail.
Vacation in Style
If your dog wants a stylin’ hairdo, or just needs a bath after carousing along the coast, Mendo Dog, Coast Grooming and Atomic Dog Grooming are three great choices in Fort Bragg. Some groomers take walk-ins for a quick bath, and offer services like teeth brushing and nail clipping, too.
If Your Pet is Under the Weather
Or if he just needs a treatment or a tune-up, we have some great vet choices right here in town, including Covington Creek Veterinary, Mendocino Coast Animal Hospital, and Detrick Veterinary Hospital.
Leave No Friend Behind
Your charming pooch may be in the mood for a ride on the Skunk Train. You can just picture his little nose on the window, looking out as the miles fly by. We’re sure he’ll never forget his wonderful vacation in Fort Bragg!
