On Sunday May 6, Liquid Fusion Kayaking and the Iota Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International are hosting an afternoon on the Noyo River to benefit “Books for Babies” and “Kits for Kindergarten”, both of which are literacy projects on the Mendocino Coast. This is a terrific opportunity to enjoy an afternoon on the Noyo River, while helping children be better at reading and writing.
The ladies of Delta Kappa Gamma will offer refreshments, and Liquid Fusion Kayaking will have kayaks available for a float on the river. All ages are encouraged to attend. Those who do not kayak can enjoy the afternoon from Liquid Fusion’s riverside deck. Kayak rentals are $10/person.
Delta Kappa Gamma International is an international society of women educators. In 2000, members of the Iota Zeta Chapter started the “Books for Babies” program. Through Books for Babies, chapter members present literacy information and the book “Good Night Moon” to the mothers of babies born at Mendocino Coast District Hospital. Since 2000, over 2100 books have been presented.
In 2009, Iota Zeta expanded its early literacy endeavors to include “Kits for Kindergarten.” In the fall, the ladies present kindergarten students in our local schools with materials to help them do their homework. The kits include primary pencils, crayons, scissors, markers, and a handwriting tablet.
