Mark Twain famously said “reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”
Same is true for the news that 70 state parks are set for imminent closure. If you read the news release closely, you would know that closures don’t begin until September.
The reality: camping season is about to begin and Mendocino Coast State Parks will be open through the summer with final closures set for 2012. Even that isn’t for sure in the ebb and flow of budget negotiations in Sacramento.
What this means is that tourist favorite MacKerricher State Park in Fort bragg (not actually on the closure list) is open for business as is Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park and Jug Handle State Reserve with it’s pristine beach and walk through giant redwoods to the world famous Hans Jenny Pygmy Forest.
You can also stay in very reasonable Fort Bragg lodging and enjoy visiting the lighthouse, riding horses on the state beach or exploring tide pools.
