The old train car got a fresh coat of paint. But not the monotone color you might expect from a railroad.

In a partnership program of the Skunk Train and the Arts Council of Mendocino County, San Francisco artist Casey Koerner and Mendocino artist Janet Self received commissions to embellish rail car 699 of the Skunk Train for a “Mobile Momento.”

A crowd gathered around at the Skunk Train Depot as train owner Robert Pinoli unveiled the new paint job during the Fort Bragg First Friday Art Walk.

Artists Koerner and Self were selected in a review panel appointed by the Skunk Train and the Arts Council of Mendocino County. The selection committee was drawn to Self’s whimsical expression and use of color and appreciated Koerner’s experience with large-scale murals and graphical depiction of the animals and landscapes of the North Coast region.
