Winesong! livens the pathways of the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens as thousands of people line up with big smiles on their faces to enjoy the music and sample some of the best cuisine and fine wines our local and regional chefs and vintners have to offer. An exciting charity auction and beer tastings round out the event, an annual benefit for the Mendocino Coast District Hospital.
The Pinot Noir Celebration at Little River Inn
Friday, September 8 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m is the time to quietly savor wines from over 30 outstanding wineries, taste marvelous cuisine from Little River Inn, and learn all about the subtle and engaging variations in Pinot Noir wines. Mingle with the winemakers and taste dishes specially crafted to pair with each wine. Musical entertainment will be Janet Orsi and Friends with eclectic/surf stylings.
Winesong! Grand Tasting of Wine and Food and Charity Auction
The main event for Winesong! takes place Saturday, September 9, so get ready for an end-of-summer celebration to remember, with food, libations and a silent auction (decide what to bid on!) from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and a the truly fun and lively LIVE auction from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Jazz, classical, blues, calypso and folk rock music compliments the food and wine, and everyone will revel in the bounty of the gardens at this time of year.
Charity Auction Highlights
From original art to luxury vacation packages and international wine getaways to Tuscany, France, South Africa and the Caribbean, this auction creates a lot of excitement with the crowds, and auctioneers know how to “stir it up” and help raise money for the hospital. Also featured are wines from the world’s most prestigious wine producers, rare vintages, large format bottles, and special wine collections.
2017 Honored Vintner and Celebrity Auction Chairs
Honored Vintner Nils Venge is the first American winemaker to receive a perfect 100 point rating from Wine Critic Robert Parker Jr. A 1985 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon catapulted Venge to a venerated position in the California wine industry and he is universally regarded as one of the foremost pioneers in the Napa Valley wine industry. He continues to produce outstanding wines at his Danish family’s Oakville facility, Saddleback Cellars.
Auction Chair Dan Berger’s wine accolades include the Wines and Vines Magazine award of excellence as Wine Writer of the Year, the Father Junipero Serra award for contributions to the wine industry, presented by the California Wine Patrons of Los Angeles, and the Wine Literary Award by the Wine Appreciation Guild. He is also a member of the Hall of Fame of the New York Wine Writers’ Circle.
Auction Chair George Rose’s vineyard photos have been used in numerous publications and calendars throughout the world of wine, and in 2007, Chronicle Books published a collection of those images in a book entitled “The Art of Terroir.” In 2014, his book, Down To Earth: A Seasonal Tour of Wine Sustainability in California with author Janet Fletcher was published by the Wine Institute. his latest book project, VINEYARD Sonoma County, will be released this fall.
2017 Featured Artwork and Music
Music for Winesong will be provided by The Francis Vanek Trio, jazz; The Mixed Nuts, calypso; Erin Brazill and The Brazillionaires, indie; Tenor Madness, funk/jazz; Christopher Cisper, classical and contemporary guitar; Jason Wright, flamenco guitar; Gwyneth Moreland, indie/folk; and Azul, Blues.
Awarded a British American Arts Council fellowship to work in Northwest Wales for several months, featured artist Rebecca Johnson became inspired by the region’s dramatic landscape of stone walls, craggy mountains, wild coastline and rich history. Barn Song, selected as the Winesong! Artwork of the Year, a bas relief that combines sculpture and painting, is made from recycled wood and metal. Rebecca now creates her artwork in a renovated barn in a beautiful and peaceful setting in Mendocino County’s Anderson Valley. Purchase Winesong! tickets here.
