Our small town is a special place to live. Those of us who have landed here feel lucky to be in such a beautiful place where the air is fresh and clean and the people are friendly and welcoming. It feels like the “Little Easy,” a town where you can leave the stresses of everyday life behind and step back in time to a comforting place where life is less complicated. There’s very little traffic here, no big box stores, only a couple of chain restaurants, and a small town charm that definitely warms the heart. You might want to start the day with a hot cup of joe at Headland’s Coffee House, where you’ll see locals and tourists mingle together in a cozy venue that’s totally lacking in pretension. You may even want to come back at night, because there is live jazz there seven nights a week! Next stop could be vintage (or new) shopping at If The Shoe Fits, owned by a lovely woman who worked at Piaci Pizza for a long time – another Fort Bragg place to be! If The Shoe Fits has consignment and new clothing, shoes, and jewelry, and it’s almost as much fun to browse as it is to buy, but you’re bound to find something wonderful. If you’d like to breeze down south of town to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, you’ll find one of the most amazing places to revel in a variety of well-tended gardens you’ll find anywhere. The gardens are among the few in the country with ocean views. Right now they have a display of handmade birdhouses for auction, or you can pick one up immediately for the price listed. Some truly creative ideas! If I were a bird, I’d definitely want to live in one of these custom made houses.. we could post myriad pics of the grounds and flowers, and will do in future posts, but for now, here’s one of our favorite châteaux for oiseaux. There are a lot of great places to have lunch in Fort Bragg. One of our favorites is a locals secret – the Tsunami Nacho Truck, which is parked at the Mendocino Coast District Hospital, and serves fresh, interesting food, including Ahi Tuna Nachos and Sweet Potato Fries. We may not have many food trucks here, but this one is definitely worth a visit! A Wednesday in Fort Bragg is not complete without a stop at the Farmers Market, where a wide variety of beautiful vegetables, fruits, flowers, and hand-crafted products await. Among our favorite vendors are Fortunate Farm, Noyo Food Forest, and Nye Ranch (their first year at the market)! They are among several farmers who bring the most beautiful bouquets to market. Aren’t they lovely people? We know you’ll enjoy our beaches, our hiking trails, and the amazing natural beauty of our town. We also know that you’ll just love the people and they’ll make you feel welcome no matter where you go in Fort Bragg! C’mon over the hill!
