Last Days of Summer: Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens
The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is a great place to get started! Delight in 47-acres of beautiful plants, trees, blooming dahlias, a cactus garden, heather garden, perennial garden, ocean views, and a vegetable garden in full bloom with lots of luscious edibles like kale, lettuce, beans, dill, basil, rosemary, artichokes, amaranth, borage, and so much more. They’ve got some lovely small events lined up including a Coast Vinyasa Flow All-Levels pop-up yoga class at 10:00 a.m. on August 18 with Alix Cooley of PathFinder Yoga Retreats. Bring your own mat and allow plenty of time to make your way to the splendiferous vegetable garden, where you’ll stretch and learn in the morning mist. Class fee includes gardens admission for the day.
Also on the 18th is another Pet Adoption Day at the gardens. The Mendocino Coast Humane Society Mobile Adoption Van will be on the property with an adorable group of adoptable animals! Find a furry friend of your own! Speaking of pets, did you know August 26th is National Dog Day? The gardens is a great place to celebrate with your canine companion. Fort Bragg Feed & Pet will be giving out samples of their best dog treats and premium dog foods on the plaza. Skelly Dogs Training will give an agility course and rally obedience demo with four dogs. So let your pup watch expert-level dogs jump and weave around the course. No wonder the gardens were named one of the best pet destinations in the western states by Via Magazine! Don’t forget the gardens are open until 7:00 p.m. Thursday-Sunday all summer.
Last Days of Summer: Third Annual PAL Big River Run and Walk
The third annual PAL Big River Run and Walk in memory of Deputy Ricky Del Fiorentino takes place on Saturday, August 25th, and includes a 1/2 Marathon, 10K and 5K along the scenic old logging haul road. You’ll glide through groves of second-growth redwoods and into the heart of the historic Big River Estuary. The course meanders along the northern bank of Big River, and utilizes age-graded timing, which puts all race participants on a level playing field, regardless of age or gender. Compare your race times to older and younger runners, and members of the opposite sex.
